Sunspots & hyper-pigmentation
If you’ve noticed some darker spots on your face lately, it could be a ”sunspot” or a patch of hyperpigmentation. But what actually causes this? And more importantly, what can you do about it?
What are Sunspots?
We’re spoiled with the amazing subtropical outdoors of the Northern Rivers, but you might be getting a little more sun exposure than you realise. If you see a lot of sun, your skin will respond by producing extra melanin. Melanin is made up of special cells called melanocytes, which form the natural pigment in your skin. It’s your amazing built-in armour from the sun, used to protect you from harmful UV radiation.
Over time, UV exposure stimulates protective melanin production which can become uneven or accumulate in patches. This can happen many years after initial exposure and can lead to visible concerns such as:
Sunspots, also known as age spots (people used to call them LIVER SPOTS eww haha.. nothing to do with your liver)
Uneven skin tone / hyperpigmentation
Melasma + other chronic conditions (which we will discuss another day)
How Can You Treat Hyperpigmentation?
The good news is that sunspots can usually be improved with the right products and treatment.
Regular Skin Checks
First and foremost, it's superrrr important that you get your spots checked to rule out other issues such as skin cancer. Your skin health matters. We recommend annual skin checks with your GP and regular self-checks in between visits. This way, any changes in your skin can be caught early and safely. If you spot anything you’re unsure about; a spot that’s growing, changing colour, or something just a bit off… go get it checked grrrlll!!!
Daily Sunscreen (non-negotiable!)
If you do only one thing, make it this. Sunscreen protects your skin from UV damage and prevents pigmentation from worsening. Look for a broad-spectrum SPF and wear it every single day, even when it’s cloudy. At Valli House, we like to use mineral/zinc based sun protection to avoid unnecessary chemicals on our skin or in the ocean. We stock multiple options in order to cater to different lifestyles and skin types.
Topical Brightening Serums
Active skincare ingredients can help to gradually fade pigmentation and even out skin tone. Tyrosinase inhibitors like tranexamic acid, vitamin C, kojic acid, and other brightening agents work to reduce excess melanin and improve skin clarity. Regular use can make a real difference, as small daily habits really do add up over time.
Professional Treatments
For more stubborn pigmentation, in-clinic treatments can make a significant difference. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) helps break down pigmentation and sun damage. Chemical Peels exfoliate the skin and promote fresh, even-toned skin renewal.
